New Dual Purpose Drive Modernizes Galvanizing Line at Steel Dynamics Inc.

TMEIC’s low voltage DC / AC adjustable speed drives installed and operating.

ROANOKE, Va. (June 21, 2017) – TMEIC Corporation (a division of Toshiba Mitsubishi-Electric Industrial Systems) is supplying new dual purpose drive equipment to modernize a galvanizing line at Steel Dynamics’ (SDI) mill in Butler Indiana.  The new low voltage TMdrive-10e2 DP Dual Purpose drive is a standard TMdrive-10e2 variable frequency drive with special pulse width modulation software enabling it to control a DC machine.  Its features include four quadrant regenerative operation from the DC armature and operation at unity power factor with reduced harmonics.

The SDI galvanizing line is the first application of the new the DP drives, which are replacing obsolete DC drives on the 21 larger DC motors. Two have been commissioned so far and the remainder will be commissioned in future planned shutdowns. 64 smaller DC motors have been replaced with AC motors driven by TMdrive-10e2 variable frequency drives. In the future, each DP drive can be easily converted to AC operation when the 21 DC motors are replaced with AC motors and cabling. This drive changeover can be implemented one motor at a time during a scheduled short shutdowns. The complete line is now running; the total system currently consists of 64 AC motors and 21 DC motors.

TMEIC has responsibility for this project, including the engineering design, equipment installation and system commissioning. The new control system includes Level 1 and 2 control using the nv Series industrial controller, HMIs, computers, and high-speed fiber optic communications.
